Pride Hockey at SRU
Return to Previous Page
» Brief History: The Slippery Men's Ice Hockey Program was born in
1971. The team played an independent schedule till joining the ACHA organization
and playing
at the D-III level. The team moved to the D-I (division 1) level for the
2002-03 season and played in the ECHL league. The team joined the newly formed CHMA (College
Hockey Mid-America) league for the start of the 2006-07 season to reduce travel
costs by playing teams local to the western Pennsylvania area.
» League Affiliation: The Slippery Rock Men's Hockey Program is part of
the American Collegiate
Hockey Association. The ACHA has been around for many years and it provides
highly-competitive college hockey to universities who can't or won't support an
official NCAA hockey program. Currently, there are five major conferences in
ACHA Division I Hockey: Central States Collegiate Hockey League (CSCHL), Eastern
Collegiate Hockey League (ECHL), Eastern Collegiate Hockey Association (ECHA),
CHMA (College Hockey Mid-America) and the "Independent League". The
SRU Pride is a member of the CHMA league and plays against the following teams:
Youngstown State, John Carroll, Washington and Jefferson, Indiana (Pa),
Duquesne, and the University of Pittsburgh. Our program also plays non-league
games against teams like University of Buffalo,
Syracuse University, Niagara University, Mercyhurst and West Virginia.
» Practice Information: During the season, the team
holds two 90 minute practices each week at the Bladerunners Ice Complex in Cranberry Twp, Pennsylvania
which is about a 40 minute drive south of the University. Tryouts for the team are held during the first
or second week in September. Once the team is selected, dry-land and weight
training are required and performed and conducted at the University.
» Game Information: All home games are
played at the Bladerunners Ice Complex on
Friday and Saturday evenings. There are also occasional Sunday matinee games.
The away games are also played on the weekends. The team travels on deluxe motor coaches to all long
distance games.
» Cost: The current cost for playing
for the Slippery Rock Men's hockey team for the 2006-07 season is
$1100.00. This fee includes all practice and game ice, travel, hotel, team
warm-up suit, jersey-socks, and meals on the road. All other costs incurred for equipment,
sticks and skate sharpening are paid for by the student athlete. All coaches and
staff are student and parent volunteers.
